This type social solidarity comes from people acting collectively to improve their standard of living both in their workplaces (where these days most of a persons time is spent) and outside them.”
And; “[C]rime can be prevented by “bottom up” methods, rather than top down ones from the capitalist state. Workers should organise collectivly to achieve a decent standard of living. Communities need to strengthen social solidarity and create a culture that does not accept a person inflicting violence on another”

Its pleasing to see that to some extent this is happening, Simon Collins wrote in a recent Herald article:

“Amid the headlined mayhem of violence and abduction, a North Shore group is working from the ground up to build a safer community – by getting to know their neighbours.
Albany and Takapuna community co-ordinators and Rebecca Harrington, a community worker for the Methodist Mission now called Lifewise, have banded together to create a Know Your Neighbours Project.”
